A gang of 5 brazen armed robbers hit two homes in Lorraine over the weekend and were finally caught and jailed within 36 hours after their second house robbery. Not even a day later a further 3 members were arrested in possession of stolen goods.

On Tuesday this week, ATLAS hosted an awards ceremony and tea party, honouring neighbourhood crime fighters, as well as congratulating the Algoa FM competition winners. The Algoa Sun and ATLAS Security hosted a “Take Back Your Neighbourhood” campaign over four weeks. The aim of the campaign was to honour individuals and groups of people who fight crime in their neighbourhoods and effectively take back their neighbourhoods. Eleven individuals from the Metro were recognised for the roles they play in fighting crime.

This year ATLAS Security celebrates 25 successful years of being an outstanding security systems provider and armed response company that has helped many local residents and business owners sleep peacefully at night.

The Coronation Double Century Cycle Challenge is a 202km team race that is limited to 200 teams. The event took place on 27 November 2010 in Swellendam in the Western Cape. ATLAS Security sponsored a team of 12 cyclists for the race. The team members’ names are: Bernhard Manson-Kullin, Erni Bilbrough, Gary Lombard, Heidi Jansen, Helga Hoflinger, John Kidson, Lesley Wood, Martin Truscott, Stefan Cronje, Sune Truscott, Tim Fraser and Venance da Silva. Congratulations to the ATLAS DC Team on their superb superhuman effort! The teams had to complete the most challenging climbs, including Tradouw Pass and Op de Tradouw, within the first 60km of the race. From Swellendam, cyclists follow the R324 through Suurbraak and over the Tradouw Pass towards Barrydale. A left turn onto the R62 takes participants to the challenging 7km Op de Tradouw, before making their way to Montague. The route then snakes through Cogmanskloof towards Ashton and Robertson, turning left onto the R317 towards Bonnievale and back to the finish in Swellendam.

A few ATLAS employees and their families took part in the BSG Energade Triathlon. This three-discipline event consists of a 600m swim, a 20km cycle and a 5km run. Congratulations to the ATLAS team who completed their triathlon.

The Eyes and Engines Team comprised of six Tandems with sighted and partially sighted cyclists successfully completing the 45 km Family Fun Ride. This ride was a successful launch of the Eyes and Engines Team which will compete on a regular basis in the future to raise awareness on Retinal Blindness and to raise funds for Retinal Research - to find treatments and cures for blinding retinal disorders and to give the opportunity for blind or partially blind persons to participate in cycling. “When a child is born, the gift of sight is taken for granted, but for some this is not so............" but, thanks to ATLAS Security's generosity, it has assisted in the process of bringing the hope of a sighted future closer to reality. ATLAS Security received an award from the prestigious Professional Management Review (PMR) today for the eighth consecutive year. ATLAS won the overall first prize Diamond Arrow award for our exemplary service in fighting crime in the Eastern Cape.

A partnership between the South African Police Service and Port Elizabeth private security companies was signed at the Mount Road police station in Port Elizabeth.

The Man-Against-Machine concept was brough back to PE! The challenge was to beat the Bus in the ultimate test of endurance and teamwork in the Algoa Bus Bay to Bay Challenge! The 100km Bay to Bay Challenge took place on Saturday 8th November. Atlas Security entered two 6-person corporate relay teams for the Algoa Bus Bay To Bay Challenge. This event was about camaraderie, fellowship, perseverance, challenge, support, care, tears and frustration, reaching a goal, doing something that you've never attempted in your life before AND making a real change in someone's life!

Atlas actively works in conjunction with the SAPS and receives regular updates from the police in respect of gang activity and stolen vehicles. This information is then radio despatched to our Reaction Units who can assist in completing the information sharing loop by being the 'eyes & ears' for the police. Port Elizabeth's new Task Team paid a visit to the Atlas Alarm Control Centre. This team make up Port Elizabeth's new Rapid Response Task Team and is lead by Captain Rassi Erasmus. They are tasked to address serious crimes in the Metro including Armed Robberies, Cash-in-transit and ATM Heists. They will work closely with the crime pattern and crime threat analysis at each police station in order to identify the problem areas.

Atlas do it again! Proudly displaying their recent PMR award are Gary Schewitz, Managing Director, and Mike Burmeister, Director of Operations. Atlas Security has again been voted the best Security Company in the Eastern Cape and has received the prestigious Professional Management Review (PMR) award for 2009. Atlas has also received the award for doing the Most to fight crime in the Eastern Cape.

Armed Reaction has long proven to be the difference when deciding on, or evaluating ones choice of security companies. Each response officer has been trained to exceed the standards imposed by the Private Security Regulatory Authority.

Monty Montgomery, Operations Manager, recently conducted a security awareness presentation at Grey Junior School. The presentation was attended by a group of enthusiastic grade 3 learners. The core message relayed was safety tips on how to be safe as school as well as travelling to and from school. Children tend to carry expensive gadgets and cellphones without disclosing them in public resulting in muggings and snatching. The safety and security of children should be a hot topic of schools and parents. It is vital that children are educated from an early age and taught how to react in various emergency situations.
