Atlas Security Is At The Forefront Of Security In Nelson Mandela Bay
The most sustainable way to reduce the crime level in any area is to provide a multi-layered solution. One measure is simply not enough as criminals are running rampant across the Metro. This multi-layered approach is a fine balance between Man and Machine.
A main pillar is the Armed Response Officers, the boots on the ground. Having the largest Armed Response fleet in the Metro ensures that the city is comprehensively covered from a proactive and reactive approach. Regular patrols are conducted throughout hotspots of the Metro to maintain a high level of visibility, which minimises the window of opportunity for criminals to strike.
The mechanical strength that enhances our security offering is the comprehensive CCTV Infrastructure across the province. Over 1000 cameras covering highways, byways and local street corners allow for suspects to be spotted before reaching their targets. There are multiple types of cameras which serve for various monitoring techniques.
The most used camera across the province on Atlas Security poles are the Licence Plate Recognition (LPR) Cameras. These proactive cameras have the ability to read and process each and every passing vehicle’s number plate. The plate is immediately run through a national database, which hosts all sought for vehicle plates in the country. In the event of a flagged vehicle passing one of our cameras, the alarm in the control room is triggered and the operators are then able to assess what the positive trigger is for and then notify the relevant SAPS department of the vehicle’s movements. We see the constant success of suspects being arrested for various crimes, ranging from armed robbery, murder, vehicle theft and more – all starting from the alert in our control room.
Another proactive tool in our CCTV arsenal is the Analytical Camera. These are cameras that have the ability to detect true human movement within pre-set parameters. The analytical capabilities allow for the camera to be able to recognise and ignore movements of bushes, shrubs, trees, animals and any other non-human elements; thus only sending alerts of human movement (within range) to the Atlas Security Control Room. Once Control Room Operators receive an alert from an Analytical Camera, they then view the live footage of the camera to analyse whether or not there is any criminal intent, and whether or not any form of response is needed for the situation. Should there be criminal intent; Atlas Security Armed Response Officers are dispatched to the scene.
The reactive cameras that Atlas Security uses are Overview Cameras. The footage recorded by these cameras are used for various purposes including; getting a live feed for any situation taking place in the range of the camera when needed, identification of potential suspects for a positive incident, providing any needed evidence to the SAPS or any other legal body in an active legal case, analysing any suspicious movement for when there is an increase of activity in the area, and more.
All forms of CCTV infrastructure are governed by strict regulations in the constitution of the country. The Protection of Personal Information (POPI) Act serves to protect the people, as if not governed correctly the footage recorded by public cameras can have devastating outcomes to the people in the footage. The recordings include the movement of people, their personal/physical information and more, which can be used to target victims if ending up in the wrong hands. Atlas Security treats all information as highly confidential and will never share any information with unauthorised personnel.
