Atlas Security has been analysing crime trends, and there is a time frame that seems to be a strong favourite for criminals at the moment.
The early hours of the morning, specifically between midnight and 4am, is coming up as a hot time zone for criminals to operate. We have seen a drastic shift from commercial properties being targeted, to residential properties. The reasoning is believed to be that residents are making their homes easy targets for criminals by not doing the very simple things that could make a criminal’s life very difficult.
A few simple steps to making your home less of a target:
Arm Your Alarms When You Go To Bed
Many people believe that they are in the house so they will wake up if someone tries to break in. This may be true when the suspects break the window to enter, but that is not happening often. Many clients are not arming their alarms and when they wake up their TV and Laptops are gone after realising that their door or window has been forced open. Criminals are getting good at keeping quiet, which is why the best way to detect them is by arming your alarm at night.
Outdoor Lighting Makes Them Visible
Criminals aim to remain undetected, which means that lights are a deterrent for them. We are seeing time and time again that they do their best work in the dark. Ensure that the lighting on the surrounding your premises is sufficient.
If there are streetlights out around your premises, ensure to report them to your ward councilor so that they can be fixed as soon as possible.
Security Is Effective In Layers
Creating a layered security solution makes a criminal’s life very difficult, so layer your defences. These layers include perimeter detection like CCTV, electric fencing, beams, burglar bars, security gates, etc. The fewer layers you have, the easier the criminal’s job is and the more exposed you are.
