Three robbers posing as patrons at an Ocean Basket restaurant along Port Elizabeth’s beachfront ambushed two security guards yesterday during a cash pick-up.

Police spokesman Warrnt Officer Alwin Labans said a preliminary investigation revealed that two of the robbers were sitting inside the restaurant while a third was waiting outside.

“A fourth robber is believed to have been waiting in a getaway vehicle;” Labans said. Two customers, who went to it outside, walked through the restaurant during the robbery without even knowing what was happening.

But later, one said, “I saw one tucking the gun into the front of his pants while running down the steps. The robbers were very well organised from what we could see.”

The robbers jumped into a blue VW Citi Golf car that was parked on Marine Drive.

Atlas Security Operations Manager Monty Montgomery said the men had sat inside posing as patrons, waiting for [Fidelity] security guards.

“The robbers then held the manager and owner at gunpoint inside the back office while they were opening the drop safe with the money,” he said.

“It looks as if they also opened the guards’ money carry cash box as a dye pack inside exploded. There was no money inside the cash box.

The Brooke’s on the Bay Centre manager refused to comment.

The Ocean Basket owner and manager also declined to comment.
