This week, Monty Montgomery, Atlas Operations Manager, pleads with readers to be more vigilant following the drastic increase in home invasions. There has been a terrible increase in house robberies, which have been extremely traumatic. He urges all subscribers to be aware of what is happening around you and in your home.
Fortunately this week’s victim narrowly escaped one of these horrific home invasions. Monty reports that this past week, a lady narrowly escaped extreme injury after she was shoved around and badly attacked with a sharp object. Monty has pleaded that all subscribers NOT to confront intruders. They are armed and dangerous, do not attempt it, as they will feel vulnerable and attack! Find a way to get help ASAP
What should you look out for?
Scouting: Monty adds that this type of “scouting behaviour” is happening all over town – criminals are constantly on the lookout, scouting and finding new targets.
Fortunately those neighbourhoods (especially townhouse complexes) with CCTV cameras will be able to pick up this info via their CCTV cameras – which is a major added benefit to you lines of defenses.
Monty reaches out to residents that reside near overgrown bushes. After clearing the most popular bushes in the Metro – Monty found good and bad people living in these bushes. The bad elements dwelling in these bushes are watching your every move. He urges residents to report all sorts of activities in bushes. Even a little trail of smoke coming from a bush could mean that there are people living there.
Report any suspicious vehicles or activity to us – we are there for you 24/7.
The importance of layered security in conjunction with your burglar alarm system. Gates, fences, doors and burglar proofing is not only a necessity, but must also be sturdy and durable. Monty urges readers to look at their situation in detail and to seriously consider adding extra layers should there be a lack thereof. Make sure that your property is properly secured.
Lighting: Outside lighting is a good deterrent enabling you to see out at night and at the same time making it difficult for the criminal to see inside. Make sure that the lights are well out of reach to prevent intruders from tampering with them.
Where possible he encourages residents, and especially 24 hour businesses, to have CCTV installed, linked to an armed response company ensuring that the response officer standing down knows what to expect when responding to emergencies. Click here for more information on this product.
Since the installation of our Atlas Security AI and LPR cameras in a few sections of the Metro, it has reduced crime in those areas. But this has moved criminals into the bushes – obviously to be out of camera eye. Beware of self-made entry/exit into the community from the bush. Analytical cameras are a costly, but incredibly effective measure being pro-active and preventing crime. These cameras have also been set up in various complexes in Port Elizabeth, which detect human movement, send a signal to our control room and can also monitor footage from our Atlas Security control room.
Remember that the suspects have been using numerous items to bypass the alarm detectors. They crawl around on the floor using mattresses, couch cushions, blankets, cupboard doors and far more. A standard PIR detector cannot see through an object, hence they have used this method to “bypass” your detectors. Monty has found that the usual “quick” burglaries for one or two items are no longer the norm – intruders are trying their utmost not to activate the alarm and get the most out of their intrusion.
In regard to the above, we would like to focus on our 360 degree PIR. This passive is mounted to the ceiling and has the ability to look over items such as a couch, cupboard door, table, blanket etc. which reduces the risk of the suspects “masking” themselves.
