This week, Atlas Security Operations Manager, Monty Montgomery, warns against complacency over crime. “Even if you are fortunate enough to not have been the victim of a burglary at your home or business, you should never drop your guard. Those who have not been affected by crime can count themselves lucky.” He says when people do fall victim to crime, they sometimes seem astonished that it had happened to them. According to him many people still have the notion that it will never happen to them. “Unfortunately nobody can afford the novelty of being complacent over falling victim to crime and in order to prevent burglaries, people must make it as difficult as possible for intruders to gain access to their properties.”
Home security should always be a top priority and having an alarm system installed offers many benefits, including:
• Reduced monthly insurance premiums may apply
• Increased value of the property
• Helps to increase the safety of the neighbourhood/area
• Provides peace of mind
Monty says good responses have resulted in the prevention of a number of home invasions and subsequent potential losses this week.
Increase your safety at home:
• Keep valuables out of sight/away from windows
• Always lock doors and close windows
• Have intelligent, unpredictable timer-activated lighting installed
• Get to know your neighbours
• Use strategic landscaping
• Get a dog
• Make sure your yard is well-lit throughout the night
According to Monty, burglaries at businesses remain a great concern. “Currently there is a surge in night time burglaries at business premises in and around the Metro.” According to him many burglaries at businesses can be prevented if proper safety measures are implemented. “Businesses must have robust perimeter protection in place. This provides a barrier to keep criminals at bay. Always ensure everything is securely locked, all windows closed and that the alarm system is armed before leaving the premises.”
With the December shutdown fast approaching, Monty urges readers to test their alarm systems as a matter of urgency and to not put it off until a week before they are leaving for the holidays. “Apart from testing your alarm system, I suggest you evaluate your interior and exterior lighting and other physical security barriers such as gates and burglar bars, spikes on high walls, electric fencing and access control measures. In some instances the services of a guarding service may even be advisable.” Contact Atlas Security on 0861 585 585 or send an email to email@example.com to request a free professional risk assessment of your property.
Monty reminds Uitenhage and Despatch readers that crime has increased tremendously in their areas. He says the small holdings on the outskirts of the two towns are also falling target to criminals. “People must remain vigilant and make sure that they have easy access to panic buttons (fixed and/or remote) in case of an emergency.”
Lastly Monty reminds readers to keep their firearms safe during the Festive Season. “The criminals want your firearms. Based on past and present trends, we know that criminals stock up on ammunition this time of the year. Over the past few weeks it has become apparent that this ‘ammunition stock piling’ is already under way.” Don’t fall victim to gun thieves.
