With preparation and planning for the December holiday in full swing, Atlas Security Operations Manager, Monty Montgomery, urges people to plan and budget for their safety and security with the same fervour.
“People tend to have little or no resistance to budget for luxury items on Black Friday or exotic holidays, while safety and security requirements often get downgraded to a lesser priority. The problem is that criminals are pulling out all the stops and we need to stay ahead of their game if we want to prevent falling victim to crime.”
He says it is of the utmost importance that existing alarm systems are tested with our Control Room regularly. “Apart from testing your system frequently, you must also ensure that the security coverage at your premises is adequate. As crime trends change, so do your security requirements. Our sales consultants are able to do recommendations based on your specific security needs against the backdrop of current crime trends. Booking a consultant for a risk assessment is free of charge, so don’t wait to become a victim of crime before addressing your security requirements.”
Roof break-ins are on the rise again. “When burglars enter through the roof, it is often impossible for our Response Officers to see that a break-in had taken place by merely walking around the building.”
For this reason, Monty says a key holder must meet up with our Response Officers on site after an alarm activation in order to grant access for a proper inspection of the inside of the building(s).
According to Monty, most criminals are well informed and do proper planning before they strike. “The only way in which we can successfully combat crime is to always be a step ahead. Many of these felons are extremely experienced and individuals and gangs often use firearms and other potentially lethal weapons.”
Through keeping a close eye on crime trends – and with excellent cooperation from the SAPS and members of the community – Atlas Security’s response team has so far made 19 successful arrests during November. “We strive to always stay a step ahead and we value the support we receive from the community and the SAPS. Successfully fighting crime is only possible when all stakeholders pull together to work towards the common goal of making our Metro safer.”
Hi-jacking incidents and muggings are on the increase. “Please be cautious at all times, especially at four way stops and traffic lights. People must remain alert at all times. Opportunistic criminals will capitalise on even the shortest lapse in your awareness of your surroundings.”
Monty’s hi-jacking precautions:
• Always be vigilant and aware of your surroundings – don’t allow for loud music or anything else to distract you while driving.
• Stay focused and alert at all times, but especially so within the last 5km before you reach your home.
• Look around to make sure that no one is following you.
• If someone is at home, call them ahead of time in order for them to check that you safely enter the premises. Also ask them to have a remote panic button handy at the time of your arrival.
• Should you suspect that someone is following you, drive to the nearest police station.
• Ensure that valuables are not visible
Stay safe and rest assured that your world is safe in Atlas’ hands.
