Monty’s Crime Report: Is your alarm working?
This week, a few home and business owners found their alarm systems beaten by criminals. Atlas Operations Manager, reports that they were either old and non-functional or “sleeping”. How do you know if your alarm is functional and working? Simple – contact our control room on 0861 585 585 and test your alarm. Make sure that we receive your signals.
Often one does not realize that peripherals of an alarm system are not working as effectively as they should be, until after an incident has taken place which leads to the rise of questions such as the how, why, etc. It is for this reason that we encourage all our clients to carry out a comprehensive walk test of their alarm at least once every 3 months. Carrying out a comprehensive walk test allows you to identify potential shortcomings in certain areas before an incident takes place and allows you to take corrective action proactively rather than reactively.
Follow these easy steps to carry out a comprehensive test of your alarm:
our Control Centre on 0861 585 585 prior to starting any tests and inform our
operators that you will be testing. This not only prevents us from having to
dispatch our response officers unnecessarily but will also allow our operators
to assist you with feedback on which zone signals were or were not received.
2. Ensure the building is completely empty and all doors and windows are closed.
3. Arm the alarm as if you were going to leave the building. As soon as the alarm has started its arming process and your exit delay time starts, open your entry / exit door and close it again (without actually going out). This will allow the alarm to acknowledge that everyone has now left the premises.
4. Once the exit time delay has expired, start walking passed every motion detector, open all doors and windows which have magnetic contacts installed, press each panic button (fixed as well as remote). Do not switch the alarm off during this time. Only once you have “triggered” each zone of the alarm system then proceed to disarm the alarm.
Armed robberies are still ongoing. Monty warns that it is accompanied by other dangerous contact crime such as attacks on armed escorts. Staff escorting valuables, parcels and cash. House robberies and even robbery from person using firearms are on the increase. Let’s take extra care and be aware of our surroundings at all times. Security personnel as well as civilians carrying fire arms are targeted. Criminals are always on the hunt for firearms.
Theft out of vehicle as well as robbery from person still seems to be easiest way of making money. Criminals thrive on easy targets. Daytime burglaries were popular this week as well as front door burglaries. Make sure that you make it difficult for the front door kickers to strike at your home.
Lastly beware of people entering businesses under false pretence. Look out for groups attracting your attention as this is how valuables disappear without you noticing anything until you need to use these items. Stay safe and rest assured, your world is secure in Atlas’ hands.
