Out of 31 burglaries this past week, 70% of them occurred in commercial areas. Sunday mornings between 00:00 and 06:30 on a Monday have been the targeted times.
In the Mount Road area over the weekend of the 11th November 2016, we were informed of 12 armed robberies.
Our highest crime trends have been:
– Wheels being stolen from vehicles parked outside
– Windows have been the most frequent point of entry
– Hijacking of vehicles
– Armed Robberies
It has come to that time of the year where thieves are desperate and will do anything to get what they want, we need to be extra careful when driving, stay alert of what is happening around you. When in your home, keep your security gates locked and if you are not using a certain part of the home, arm it in the mean time.
When assessing your sense of security, you need to think the way a burglar would. What are your easily accessible areas, do you have enough protection should something happen. Are you close to your panic buttons in case of emergency, it is always important to never put yourself in a situation where you would be vulnerable?
During your shopping or when in a public area, stay focused on your surroundings, be aware of suspicious behaviour and report it. Our armed burglars do not stick out like a sore thumb so monitor behaviour.
We have also picked up on a trend where our burglars are using carpets, blankets and mattresses to get over electric fencing and walls with spikes. They are targeting small windows where they remove the burglar bars and have easy access into your premises. Please do not forget that a consultant can come out free of charge to do a risk assessment on the current protection you have.
Atlas Security also offers what we call CCTV Connect, we provide virtual monitoring packages – in our state-of-the-art control room, and we have a video wall with dedicated operators who monitor CCTV.
CCTV Connect has the convenience of being connected to your current system, allowing you to select parameters for viewing. In reality what this means is that depending on the monitoring package you select, you will be able to set certain elements, that when breached or triggered, allow us to see your CCTV through a live stream. Our highly trained controllers are able to ascertain the level of threat, and brief our armed response officer regarding the scene which awaits him. The SAPS are far more likely to respond to potential crime scenes if they know there has been a definite intrusion, which is live.
