Why Leaving Your Garage Door Open Is an Open Invitation for Crime

Crime

We’ve noticed a growing trend lately: more and more clients are leaving their garage doors open, often without realizing the risk. Maybe you’re busy unloading groceries, doing a quick job in the garden, or you’ve simply forgotten to close up before heading inside. It’s easy to overlook, but it’s a habit that criminals are watching closely.

Your garage is more than just a place for your car. For most people, it’s where valuable tools, bikes, and equipment are stored. Sometimes, it even provides direct access to your home or business. Leaving your garage door open, even for a few minutes, gives opportunistic criminals an easy way in.

Here’s what we’re seeing:

  • Criminals don’t need much time. It can take less than a minute for someone to grab something valuable and disappear.
  • Open doors are an open invitation. Most burglaries are crimes of opportunity. If your garage door is open, you’re making it much easier for someone to target your property.
  • Access to your home. Many garages connect straight to living spaces. An open garage door could be the only barrier between an intruder and your family or staff.

How to lower your risk:

  • Always close your garage door, even if you’re just popping inside for a moment.
  • Consider installing a garage door sensor or a smart alarm that can notify you if the door is left open.
  • Don’t leave valuables in plain sight. Keep bikes, tools, and other items locked away or out of view.

At Atlas Security, we’re committed to helping you keep your home and business safe. It only takes a second to close the door, but it could save you a lot of trouble.

If you have any questions about how to better secure your property, our team is always here to help.
