Atlas Security’s Rapid Intervention Unit: A Year of Relentless Pursuit, Precision Policing, and a Bigger Future Ahead

When Atlas Security launched the Rapid Intervention Unit in December last year, it was more than a new division. It was a statement. A promise to Nelson Mandela Bay that we would meet rising crime with sharper skill, stronger strategy, and a team built for intense, high-pressure response.

Twelve months later, that promise stands tall. What started as a specialised four-member team has become one of the most powerful crime-fighting forces in private security in our region. The RIU has grown to twelve highly trained officers, operating four per shift, around the clock, seven days a week. Their presence is no longer an added advantage. It’s a cornerstone of how Atlas Security protects this metro.

A Year of Breakthroughs and Big Wins

The RIU’s first year has been nothing short of exceptional. From high-speed pursuits to targeted operations, this unit has repeatedly demonstrated why it exists: to respond where others can’t, won’t, or simply can’t get there fast enough.

The public has already seen glimpses of their impact. Dashcam footage from recent pursuits showed the team pushing through terrain where SAPS’ low-clearance vehicles had to pull back. In other operations, RIU officers have intercepted fleeing suspects, supported SAPS during armed confrontations, and brought some of the Bay’s most brazen criminals to a dead stop.

Many arrests across the metro in 2025 were made possible because the RIU was first to eyes-on, first to act, and unwavering in pursuit. Their work has repeatedly filled the gap between an incident unfolding and SAPS arriving on scene, giving law enforcement a massive advantage.

And while the public sees the final moments, the flashing lights, the apprehensions, the successes, what they don’t often see is the engine behind it all.

The Work No One Sees

Behind every strong unit is strategy. Behind every arrest is intelligence. Behind every major success is a team working quietly, methodically, and relentlessly.

A significant part of the RIU’s strength comes from the close partnership between the unit and our in-house investigator. Hours of combing through footage, tracing patterns, rebuilding timelines, and connecting dots play a major role in how quickly and effectively the RIU can strike.

This behind-the-scenes collaboration has directly supported SAPS investigations throughout the year. Evidence packages, analysis of suspect movements, linking vehicle activity through our vast CCTV and LPR network, and detailed on-scene reporting have empowered SAPS with information that matters.

Most of this work isn’t seen by the public. It isn’t publicised. But it’s there, every day, driving real outcomes.

Taking the RIU to the Next Level in 2026

With the unit now expanded to twelve officers and operating 24/7, Atlas Security is stepping into a new era of rapid response.

In 2026, the RIU will evolve even further. The vision is clear:

  • Deeper integration with new CCTV and AI-driven technologies.
  • Faster deployment strategies across high-risk zones in Nelson Mandela Bay.
  • Enhanced training, focusing on tactical response, investigations, and coordinated operations with SAPS.
  • More specialised equipment to handle the complex environments officers face.

The demand is growing. Criminals are becoming more organised, more daring, and more unpredictable. Our RIU is rising to meet that challenge with scale, skill, and sophistication.

A Force Built for the Bay

The Rapid Intervention Unit has shifted how Atlas Security operates. It has changed how we respond, how we prevent, and how we protect. It has changed the way criminals move in this metro, because they now know there is a team built specifically to pursue them.

What began as a four-man powerhouse has become a full-time, high-impact intervention force across Nelson Mandela Bay. And this is only the beginning.

2026 will reshape what rapid response looks like for our communities. With a larger team, new tools, and an unshakeable commitment to protecting the Bay, the RIU is stepping into its next chapter, stronger and ready for whatever comes next.

Atlas Security promised to push harder for this city.

The RIU is the proof.
