There is a saying in communitysafety that the numbers tell a story. This week, the story is an encouragingone.
Atlas Security responded to 85 incidents across Nelson Mandela Bay between 22 and 28 February 2026. Thatis down from 95 incidents the previous week, and down from 110 the week beforethat. This marks the second consecutive week of declining incident numbers across the metro, a trend we are cautiously optimistic about.
A 10.5% week-on-week reduction is meaningful. It does not happen by accident. It is the result of consistentpatrols, faster response times, and communities staying engaged and reportings uspicious activity. While we are encouraged by the direction, we are not complacent. The data still reflects real crime affecting real people, and that drives everything we do.
The Busiest Day
Sunday, 22 February, was themost active day of the week with 25 incidents logged. Sundays have historically shown higher activity, and this week was no different.Interestingly, the week ended on a much quieter note, with only 7 incidents recorded on Friday, 28 February. That kind of tapering-off mid-to-late week isa positive pattern we want to see continue.
What We Responded To
Theft and attempted theft remain the dominant categories, which is consistent with the broader crime land scape across South Africa. Property crime continues to be opportunistic and targeted at vulnerabilities, whether that is an unsecured gate, an unmaintained perimeter, or an isolated location.
• Theft– 25 incidents
• Theft Attempt – 15 incidents
• MedicalEmergencies – 11 incidents
• Burglary Positive – 9 incidents
• Burglary Attempt – 7 incidents
• VehicleAccidents / Incidents – 6 incidents
• Robbery of Person – 4 incidents
• Assault– 3 incidents
• Armed Robbery – 2 incidents
• Other(Trespassing, Fire, Vandalism) – 3 incidents
It is also worth noting that our teams responded to 11 medical emergencies during the week. Atlas Security has always believed that protecting our community goes beyond crime. When someone needs help, we show up.
Most Affected Areas
The suburbs that recorded the highest incident counts this week were Walmer (8), Sidwell (5), Summerstrand(4), Cannon Hill (4), Gqeberha Central (4) and Vanes Estate (4).
Quieter Areas This Week
On the other end of the spectrum, a significant number of suburbs recorded just a single incident for the entire week. This includes areas like Glenhurd, Humewood, Fernglen, Frameby, Parsons Hill, and Mount Croix, among many others. In total, 24 suburbs recorded only one incident each. That is a strong indicator that patrolc overage and community vigilance are working in many parts of the metro.
How We Are Keeping These Numbers Down
Two consecutive weeks of declining incidents is not a coincidence. It reflects a deliberate and coordinated approach to security across the metro. Here is what Atlas Securityi s doing to maintain and improve on these numbers:
• Increased patrol visibility in high-frequency areas. Our armed response teams conduct regular patrols in suburbs that consistently record higher activity, making it harder for criminals to operate undetected.
• AtlasVision AI-powered camera surveillance. Our AI-driven camera network monitors key areas in real time, detecting suspicious behaviour and alerting our control room before incidents escalate.
• 24/7 monitoring and rapid dispatch. Our controlr oom never sleeps. Every alarm activation, phone-in, and social media report is assessed and dispatched without delay.
• Community-driven reporting. A significant number of incidents this week were reported via social media channels. When communities stay alert and report what they see, response times improve and outcomes change.
• Collaboration with SAPS and other security partners. Several of this week's arrests and resolutions involved cooperation between our teams and law enforcement. That partnership is a critical part of how we operate.
The Bigger Picture
Two weeks of declining numbers is progress. Our aim is to make that three, and then four, and to build a sustained pattern of reduction that our clients and communities can feel. Nelson Mandela Bay deserves to feel safe, and Atlas Security will keep showing up, every hour of every day, to make that a reality.
If you see something suspicious, report it immediately. Your vigilance is part of the solution.
